For the Base

  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil olive oil can be a substitute
  • 1 pound Shrimp (peeled and deveined), can substitute with chicken or tofu
  • 1 pound Ground Beef and Sausage using turkey sausage lightens it up
  • 1 medium Onion (chopped), shallots can be used for a milder taste
  • 1 medium Bell Pepper (chopped), can vary with other sweet peppers
  • 3 cloves Garlic (minced), fresh garlic is preferred

For Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon Oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Thyme Italian seasoning can be substituted
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Chili Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • ½ teaspoon Cayenne Pepper adjust for spice level

For Thickness and Flavor

  • 2 tablespoons Flour cornstarch can be a gluten-free option
  • 4 cups Chicken Broth vegetable broth for vegetarian option

For the Carbohydrate

  • 1 cup Long-Grain White Rice or Jasmine Rice, brown rice for added fiber

  • Season the peeled and deveined shrimp with your favorite seafood seasoning.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the shrimp for about 2-3 minutes on each side until pink and charred, then set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add oil if needed, then brown the ground beef and sausage for about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add chopped onions, bell peppers, and minced garlic. Sauté for about 5 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in oregano, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, then sprinkle with flour.
  • Gradually add chicken broth, allowing to simmer for 5-7 minutes until flavors meld and the broth thickens.
  • Stir in the rice, letting it simmer for another 5 minutes to absorb flavors.
  • Fold the cooked shrimp back into the skillet and stir to combine well. Serve hot.

Notes

Garnish with chopped green onions for a fresh finish. Allowing the dish to sit before serving enhances the flavors.
