Ingredients
  

For the Apple Filling

  • 5 medium apples, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 pinch salt

For the Crust & Topping Mixture

  • 1 ½ cups salted butter, melted
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups old-fashioned whole rolled oats
  • 1 ½ cups light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Salted Caramel Sauce

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoon salted butter, cubed
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 pinch fine sea salt

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350℉. Spray a 9x13 pan with nonstick spray and line with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, toss together the apples with all the apple filling ingredients. Stir gently with a silicone spatula.
  • Melt the butter in a large bowl. Stir in the remaining bar ingredients.
  • Reserve 2 cups of the crust mixture for the top of the bars. Press the rest into your prepared pan.
  • Spoon the apple mixture over the base in an even layer and sprinkle the remaining crust mixture on top.
  • Bake for 38 to 45 minutes until golden and tender.
  • Let cool on a wire rack for 1-2 hours before slicing.
  • Make the salted caramel sauce while the bars are baking, following a specific recipe.

Serving

  • Slice the bars and drizzle with salted caramel as desired. Store in an airtight container.
  • Caramel can be made up to 3 days ahead. Microwave to loosen before using.
  • Bars can be made up to 1 day ahead and stored in the fridge.

Notes

For best results, refrigerate the bars whether or not they have caramel on top.
